Learning just in time

Poland, the new EU accession country, is located just 80 kilometres from Berlin. At the time of the project, not enough was known about the Polish education system. The mobility project “Learning just in time”, supported the cooperation and exchange of VET managers in the area of commerce. Two groups from the Berlin Secondary School and VET College of Higher and Further Training (OSZ) met for one-week working visits in Warsaw with their polish colleagues at commercial schools with representatives of the Polish Ministry of Education and various training companies.

The focus was on topics such as the implementation of the training regulations in different learning institutions, the comparison of the education system in Germany and Poland, tasks of the institutions responsible for initial and continuing vocational education and training, as well as quality standards and examination structures and the development of new teaching and learning methods during the vocational education.

The BGZ was responsible for the overall project. It prepared the programme, organised company visits and arranged the dissemination and transfer.

The results of the project brought progress for both sides, e.g. the development of cooperation between vocational education and SMEs, the acquisition of know-how for VET managers in Poland and Germany and the exchange of common standards in the vocational education in the area of commerce. In addition, the town partnership of Berlin and Warsaw gained renewed momentum.

“The relatively long time in which Polish pupils are in school together is interesting. Ability differentiation (and curriculum differentiation) starts much later. I was very impressed by the huge efforts of the Polish youth to qualify for the labour market, as they are in school for a shorter period of time.”
