EUROKOMM – Internship for apprentices in the hotel and gastronomy industries
Dealing with people from different countries and cultures is a normality for employees in the hotel and gastronomy industries. Staff in the hotel industry are more multicultural than in any other profession. Apprentices therefore need both mobility and cultural understanding.
The project included three-week internships for three groups with a total of 32 apprentices. The placements were in hotels in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, Turkey. Preparation and follow-up stages supported the objectives of the project. The apprentices were working in multinational teams and were immediately involved in the multi-faceted everyday life at the hotels, for example with tasks in the service and housekeeping area, preparation of Turkish specialities, serving food, interior decoration for events, etc. They also had the opportunity to get to know the Turkish culture well. BGZ took over the application and coordination of the project EUROKOMM.
The project was acknowledged by a certificate of attendance and documented in the EUROPASS. Instructors use the experience for the revision of teaching materials. EUROKOMM also strengthened the town partnership between Berlin and Istanbul.
“In the course of the internship the BGZ had organised in Turkey we became acquainted not only with the hotel sector in other countries but also with their culture.”
